Nothing can be as heinous as a rape. It’s a crime against humanity itself, besides its social and legal implications. Thankfully there are strict laws against rape not just in India, but in every country of the world. But sadly, while other countries and police forces are prompt to bring most of the rapists to book efficiently, it is not the case in India. And the social stigma attached to a rape victim doesn't help the situation. According to some statistics, only one in 69 rape cases in India are even reported. Only 20% of those reported result in convictions for the rape accused. This amounts to only 1 conviction per 350 rapes or so. There is nothing more to add to such a situation, except an appeal to the judiciary and the police to establish faster procedures for dealing with rape victims. Societal changes will take a long time to come into effect but we can have a quickstart in the court of law, at least. Friendly help from police and fast track courts will go a long way if getting quick justice for rape victims who come forward to report the crime. It will also motivate others who shy away because of the cumbersome legal processes.
