Earth Hour was celebrated on March 28 with lot of support from near and far quarters. India played a big role in this global effort to show solidarity against global warming. Those supporting the cause have been asked to switch off their lights during this time. But switching off our lights for just one hour on one single day won't help. The power companies will keep on producing as much power as they were producing, simply because the daily demand stands at the same average. So the amount of fuel burnt in producing the electricity will remain the same and would hardly make a difference.
What we need is to cut down electricity consumption. This will lower the monthly/annual demand in the longer run and would force the power companies to generate lesser electricity. A sustained drop in demand by consumers is the key to pushing the power generating companies to produce less power (and hence burn less fuel). Hence, this request to the common man to be attentive and logical while using electricity. Everyone trying to save a little bit of electricity would make a difference, equivalent of tons of fuel everyday.
