The power scenario in Mumbai is in complete disarray. Being the commercial hub, there would be a lot of pressure from the government on the power utilities to ensure that the city does not face outages. But the worst-hit will be the common consumer who is made to bear an average tariff hike of 52% by the BEST and 17% hike by Reliance Infrastructure (RInfra).

On March 25 for BEST and March 26 for RInfra, the tariff will be fixed by Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) individually for both. MERC is requested to consider consumer protection against corporate malpractices before deciding upon the power tariffs. MERC is requested to not let them get away with charging consumers the inflated costs of power bought from open market.
