I support this petition. yet another reminder of the repeated, and also rather indiscriminate invocation of a provision of criminal law that itself is not strictly in tune with the democratic spirit of republicanism, similar to such other provisions as contempt of court etc.

The eminent people mentioned on this petition plus centre for science and environment delhi must help form a legal support group countrywide for such courageous individuals. In this particular case at Salem, the district SP should be notified and he should be able to quash the sedition charges unless he is under political pressure. It is not mentioned whether the local caretaker for the MP of the constituency Mr Chidambaram, union home minister has also been apprised of the case and his reaction to the arrest.
In case of the special economic zone land acquisition process, there have been many cases where landowners have become joint stakeholders in the proposed SEZs and have an assured means of livelihood and rehabilitation. Such cases at Pune, Maharashtra etc could be understood and asked for in this particular instance too. A google search may bring up such win-win stories.

Just by voicing support on this online website won't help Piyush. Some group of people at SALEM must physically join Piyush and fight for his rights there. This is a simple case of abuse of power by a few petty police officials. The core group must escalate this instance of abuse of power to the right authorities till they listen and pass the correct orders. At the PMO level, his case will never be heard unless it has escalated up the chain of command in the right way. There is a similar case being fought in Mumbai for 10 RTI activists who have been booked by an overzealous police inspector here and their story can perhaps be emulated to understand the right way of getting results. They have studied the law and cited enough supreme court judgements on abuse of executive privilege and wrongful arrest. Also they are keeping the press informed and the developments are reported as they happen in the printed media as well as on a huge network of an email list. They are succesfully escalating their complaints up the chain of command--the matter has now reached the commr of police level.
