A stereotype is a preconceived idea that attributes certain characteristics (in general) to all the members of class or set. The term is often used with a negative connotation when referring to an oversimplified, exaggerated, or demeaning assumption that a particular individual possesses the characteristics associated with the class due to his or her membership in it. Stereotypes can be used to deny individuals respect or legitimacy based on their membership in that group. Stereotyping often results from, and leads to, prejudice and bigotry. Unchecked prejudice and bigotry leads to discrimination, violence, and, in extreme cases, genocide. Language, particularly slang, is often used to dehumanize members of certain groups of people, and this dehumanization is a precursor of discrimination, isolation, and violence. In day to life, we all hold many wrongly formed prejudices against people of various caste, race, religion, etc. This petition is to urge all of you to support equality and suspend judgement based on appearances.
